Terengganu's old royal mosque, known as the White Mosque and the Big Mosque, in the heart of Kuala Terengganu. Sultan Zainal Abidin II built it of timber between 1793 and 1808; it was rebuilt in brick in the mid-nineteenth century, given a new dome in 1881 and enlarged several times since. It is a gleaming white building crowned by many small domes and a tall, slender minaret, with arches and decorated windows, and inside are white columns and an ornate wooden minbar. Beside it is an old royal mausoleum where several sultans of Terengganu are buried. It welcomes visitors outside prayer times in modest dress, with shoes removed and a head covering for women. Entry is free. It is a few steps from Istana Maziah, Bukit Puteri and the Payang market, so combine them on a walk around the old centre, then carry on to Chinatown by the river.
