The best-known national park in northern Sweden, and one of **the most reliable places on earth to see the northern lights** — for a reason that is geography rather than luck. The effect is called the **"blue hole«**. The Scandinavian mountains to the west intercept the wet Atlantic winds and dump their rain on the Norwegian side, so the air reaching Abisko is dry. The result is a **near-permanent gap in the cloud cover** above the area: while the rest of Lapland is overcast, Abisko's sky is clear. The park is also the start of the **Kungsleden**, the King's Trail, Sweden's best-known long-distance path, running 440 kilometres south. In summer the sun **does not set at all** between late May and mid-July, so you can walk at midnight in full daylight. In winter the reverse: polar night, and aurora. Through the park runs the red-walled **Abiskojokka canyon**, and it sits on the huge lake **Torneträsk**. Note: **entry is entirely free** and always open, and the train from Kiruna stops in the park.

The basic requirement is **darkness**, so the season runs **September to late March**, best from late September to mid-March. During the midnight-sun summer they **cannot be seen at all**, whatever the solar activity. Three conditions matter: clear sky (Abisko's advantage), darkness away from town lights, and enough solar activity. The best hours are between **10 pm and 2 am**. ⚠ The most important practical point: **allow at least three nights** — one night is a gamble, and three nights at Abisko specifically makes the odds very good. ⚠ Do not believe anyone who guarantees a sighting; nobody can.
