Abismo Anhumas is a vast underground cavern near Bonito, entered only through a narrow crack in the surface, from which visitors are lowered on ropes 72 metres into the dark until they reach an underground lake the size of a football pitch, some 80 metres deep, with water as clear as glass. In the lake visitors snorkel over huge limestone cones under the water, some 18 metres tall and among the largest such formations in the world, while sunlight slips in from the opening far above. Divers can also book a scuba dive. It is Bonito's most expensive and adventurous experience: daily numbers are very small, so book weeks ahead; the minimum age is 8 and weight must be between 35 and 150 kilos, and a mechanical system lowers and raises you. It is not for anyone afraid of heights or enclosed spaces.
