The Heritage Village is an open-air museum on the Breakwater in Abu Dhabi, about 5 km west of the city centre in a straight line, on the shore facing the Corniche. Run by the Emirates Heritage Club, it shows how people here lived before oil was found. The village recreates the pieces of traditional desert and coastal life: arish houses built of palm fronds, goat-hair tents, a falaj channel that carried water to the farms, a well, and tools for fishing and pearling. In its small souk, craftspeople work at pottery, weaving and palm-frond crafts, and a small museum displays everyday objects from the past. A mud-brick gate with crenellated towers leads in, and inside, stone paths wind between palm trees and traditional wooden boats. From its sandy beach the view stretches across turquoise water to the skyscrapers of the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Visitors look around the houses and workshops, watch the craftspeople at work, then sit on the beach to take in the city skyline. It suits families, and heritage events are held here on national occasions.
