Acadia National Park is a park on the Maine coast in the northeastern United States, southwest of the town of Bar Harbor, about 8 km from it in a straight line. It includes about half of Mount Desert Island, part of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula and parts of sixteen smaller islands. The park holds the tallest mountain on the US Atlantic coast, Cadillac Mountain, along with bare granite domes, boulders carried by glaciers, U-shaped valleys and cobble beaches. A historic carriage-road system runs through it. Human history here goes back more than 10,000 years with the Wabanaki people. It was first proclaimed in 1916, took its present name in 1929, and was the first national park east of the Mississippi. Clear Jordan Pond lies between pine forests, two rounded hills mirrored in its surface and pink granite boulders along its shore. From the top of Cadillac Mountain the view opens over Bar Harbor and the islands scattered across the bay, and in autumn the forests turn red and orange. Visitors climb Cadillac Mountain for sunrise, walk around Jordan Pond and cycle the carriage roads. Summer and early autumn are the best times.
