The Açude Velho, the «Old Reservoir», is a lake in central Campina Grande, Paraíba, that was first the water source for the city and region; once piped water arrived, it became the city's postcard and part of its heritage. The reservoir was built because of the drought that struck the north-east from 1824 to 1828: the provincial government began it in 1829 and finished it in 1831, and for nearly a century it was the largest reservoir in the Campina Grande area. In the later great droughts of 1845 and 1877 it was a vital water source for the population. Today modern landmarks stand on its shores, above all Oscar Niemeyer's Museum of Popular Art of Paraíba and a digital museum. A broad promenade runs around the lake, popular for walking, running and sitting, best at sunset when the lights reflect on the water. In June the lake is close to the heart of the city's famous «São João» festivities.
