The Adachi Museum of Art is a museum in the city of Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture, opened in 1970, about 16 km southeast of Matsue in a straight line. It holds a collection of modern Japanese paintings, including works by Yokoyama Taikan, and is famous for its gardens. Its six gardens and around 1,500 works of painting, pottery and other art cover an area of 165,000 square metres. The museum earned the top three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, and in April 2020 it opened a separate hall for the works of the artist Kitaōji Rosanjin. The gardens spread across raked white gravel and shrubs clipped into round green mounds, with pine trees, rocks and small ponds, and the distant hills seem part of the scene behind them. Their colours change with the seasons, from summer green to autumn tones. Visitors mostly view the gardens from the museum's corridors and wide windows, which frame each scene like a painting, then visit the painting galleries. It makes a half-day trip from Matsue.
