The home and museum of Affandi, Indonesia's most celebrated twentieth-century painter and pioneer of its expressionism, known for his unique method of squeezing paint straight from the tube onto the canvas and working it with his fingers, giving his paintings a vivid, restless energy. He built the house himself on the riverbank with a roof shaped like a banana leaf. The museum's pavilions show hundreds of Affandi's paintings, from his many self-portraits to scenes of ordinary life and nature, along with works by his daughter Kartika and wife Maryati. His old decorated car and bicycle are on display, and Affandi rests in his grave in the garden, as he wished. Tickets for foreigners are around seventy-five thousand rupiah, usually including a drink, and photography may cost extra. It suits art lovers, takes about an hour, and lies on the way to Prambanan and the old airport.
