A national park in the far north-east of Hungary on the Slovak border, inscribed as World Heritage for its limestone cave network, among the most important cave systems in Europe. The best known is the Baradla-Domica cave, a system running some twenty-five kilometres and crossing the border into Slovakia. The cave is known for its massive formations of stalagmites and stalactites, including a column counted among the largest found in Europe. What truly distinguishes it is sound: one chamber has exceptional acoustic properties and is used for actual concerts underground. Tours normally include a sound and light presentation in that chamber. Tours run at different lengths, from short ones suited to families to long routes of several hours needing fitness and equipment. Decisive practical points: the visit is by guided tour only — there is no free entry. The distance from Budapest is around two hundred kilometres, a full day by car and difficult by public transport. The temperature inside the cave is about ten degrees year-round — take a jacket whatever the weather outside.

The short tour, about an hour, suits families and anyone with children and covers the main chambers. The long tours run several hours, include narrower and harder sections, and need fitness and proper footwear. Read the description of each before booking — the difference is large.
It is difficult. Public transport to Aggtelek is limited and involves changes, and the distance makes for a very long day. Without a car, consider an organised tour from Budapest, or save the visit for a trip covering northern Hungary more broadly.
