Aguadilla is a city in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico, with the Atlantic on its north and west and 55,101 people in the 2020 census. It is known by nicknames including «Garden of the Atlantic» and «Shark Town», stands out for its seafront and bay, and makes a good gateway to the west coast and the beaches of Rincón. Luis de Córdova founded it in 1775, after residents began seeking a separate town as early as 1736, and its first name was San Carlos de La Aguadilla. It grew thanks to its fine port and its place on shipping routes. Ramey Air Force Base was later built on its land, and a small museum stands there today. The town centre has a round plaza with a statue and flowers, along with colourful buildings, and on the seafront big letters spelling Aguadilla draw people for pictures. A high overlook shows the sea and red flowering trees, with green and blue spreading over the bay. In El Parterre Square is an old water spring used by early settlers and Spanish soldiers. It is about 14 km in a straight line from Punta Higuero Lighthouse at Rincón. Its airport makes it handy for starting a trip around the west, and you will want a car. Check the sea before swimming, as waves are strong in some seasons, especially winter. Keep belongings out of sight in your car, and eat in the centre or near the seafront.
