Águas da Prata is a small spa town of about eight thousand people in São Paulo state, on the slope of the ancient volcanic plateau of Poços de Caldas, close by, drawing visitors from across the country with its mineral waters and scenery. The first spring was found by chance: in 1876 a dentist, Rufino Luiz de Castro Gavião, noticed a spring on a farm in the area, and the fame of its healing waters began. The Águas Prata mineral-water bottling company has worked here since that year, and railways and hotels followed with the coffee cycle. Today visitors walk between its springs, waterfalls and mountain trails; the municipality includes the village of Cascata and the district of São Roque da Fartura. It makes a quiet outing for anyone staying in Poços de Caldas.
