Águas de São Pedro is a small spa town in São Paulo state, some 187 kilometres from the capital and near Piracicaba; it is the state's smallest municipality and Brazil's second-smallest, covering just 3.61 square kilometres. It has recorded the highest human development index in the state and in Brazil on the FIRJAN index, and has no countryside at all: it is purely a resort town that grew around its mineral and thermal springs, with streets and gardens laid out for rest and water cures. Visitors come for the mineral baths and to stroll its quiet tree-lined gardens and historic hotels, and it is also known for its cosmetics industry. It makes a relaxing outing from Piracicaba or neighbouring São Pedro.
