Ahu Akivi is a sacred stone platform on Chile's Easter Island, carrying seven moai of identical shape and size. Unlike most platforms, it stands inland rather than on the coast, and its statues look out towards the ocean. It was probably set up in the 16th century and is also known as an astronomical observatory: the seven statues face sunset exactly at the spring equinox and turn their backs to sunrise at the autumn equinox. The Rapa Nui saw the moai as ancestors who protected the clan and brought it prosperity. The platform was restored in the 1960s. You see seven grey stone statues with similar long faces, lined up on a low stone platform above a wide green meadow. Gum trees and green hills lie behind, a fenced grassy area in front, with blue sky and white clouds above. It is about 5 km from Hanga Roa in a straight line. The statues are sacred, so do not approach or touch them, and stay behind the rope.
