The cable car itself is easy — you stand in a cabin — and the upper walkways are railed and safe. The two tests: bitter cold (dress everyone for winter) and altitude, which tires some above 3,800 m — go slow, drink water, descend promptly if a headache builds. School groups ride up daily all summer.
Book the first ride, two hours up top (terraces, Step, the in-rock exhibits), and descend before the afternoon cloud that wraps the summit most summer days after one. Give the afternoon to Chamonix itself or the Mer de Glace — do not cram both before noon.
Free with the ascent, via its own queue and slippers over your shoes to protect the glass. You get about a minute standing for the photo — and the first knee-wobble is real, and funny afterwards.

The Aiguille du Midi is the highest you can reach in Europe without climbing: a legendary cable car leaping from central Chamonix in two stages to a rock spire at 3,842 metres — 2,800 metres gained in twenty minutes, meadows to eternal snow. Up there, another world: terraces hung over the void, Mont Blanc — western Europe's roof — full-length before you, and a sea of Alpine summits across France, Italy and Switzerland. And the Step into the Void: a glass box jutting over a thousand metres of nothing, where you stand for the Alps' most famous happy-terror photograph. From the top, the bold continue on the panoramic Vallée Blanche gondola over the glaciers into Italy itself. This is the absolute Alpine experience — expensive, and worth every cent on a clear day.
