The Akrotiri lighthouse has guarded the island's southwestern tail since 1892 โ among Greece's oldest (French-built) and finest-set: a white tower on the last lava promontory where caldera meets open sea, the horizon an unbroken circle. It is the other end's sunset: the angle exactly opposite Oia โ the sun drops and the whole caldera ignites before you, walls, islets, Oia itself a distant white dot โ its audience a few cars and photographers who know, never crowds. The lighthouse itself is closed (still working today) while the scene around stays always open โ the sitting rocks a natural sunset amphitheatre. Half an hour's drive from Fira through Akrotiri โ pair it with the dig and Red Beach in the afternoon and close at dusk: the complete southern finale.
