Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a nature reserve between Bani Yas, Mussafah and the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain road, about 32 km southeast of the city of Abu Dhabi in a straight line. It is one of the best birdwatching sites in the UAE. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan set up the reserve in 1998, and in 2013 it was listed as a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance. Flocks of greater flamingos live here, along with many migrant and resident bird species, and flamingos breed here in some years. Shallow saltwater lakes stretch between low dunes and desert shrubs, with pink flamingos standing in long lines mirrored in the still water. White salt flats and turquoise pools lie at the reserve's edges. The reserve opens to visitors only in the cooler months, usually from October or November to March, and on set days of the week. Short trails lead to bird hides, so bring binoculars. The Fossil Dunes are close by.
