Alappuzha's main beach on the Arabian Sea, a wide strip of sand with an old pier more than 150 years old reaching out to sea, a reminder of the days when Alappuzha was one of Kerala's important trading ports. Next to the beach stands Alappuzha's historic red-and-white lighthouse, which you can climb for views over the coast and town, and the beach hosts yearly events including a beach festival and a sand-art festival. Locals gather on the sand and promenade in the evening to watch the sunset, with snack and ice-cream carts about, a children's park and benches under the trees nearby. The beach is free and always open; swimming isn't advised because of waves and currents. Sunset is the loveliest time, and it pairs easily with a backwater trip the same day.
