One of Java's oldest and most isolated forests, a national park covering the Blambangan peninsula in the island's far south-east, with dense forest, wild beaches and grassland, wrapped in local legend; its name means the first forest. At the Sadengan grassland, banteng, peafowl and deer can be seen from a watchtower; on the coast is the long sandy Trianggulasi beach; and at the far south lies Plengkung, known worldwide as G-Land, one of Asia's most famous surf spots with huge waves. The forest has caves some visitors come to for contemplation. The foreigners' fee is higher than locals', roads inside the park are rough, and a car or motorbike is essential. Facilities are very few. Allow a full day, come in the dry season, and bring water and food. Surfing at G-Land is for experts only.
