Mar Chiquita in Buenos Aires province is a long coastal lagoon running beside the Atlantic, separated from it by a ridge of tall dunes and linked to it by an inlet where seawater mixes with fresh streams from the Tandil hills. It is the only coastal lagoon of its kind in Argentina, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1996. Not to be confused with the salt lake of Mar Chiquita in Córdoba. This mix of salt and fresh water creates a rich environment drawing great numbers of resident and migrating birds, making it one of the coast's best birdwatching sites, as well as a place for fishing, paddling and walks along its quiet shores. A small village and beach sit by its inlet to the sea. Visiting is free, a half-day from Mar del Plata. Bring binoculars.

No, this is a coastal lagoon on the Atlantic near Mar del Plata; Córdoba's Mar Chiquita is an inland salt lake.
