Praia das Maçãs lies directly below, and nearby Azenhas do Mar is a pretty small coastal town. The historic tram from Sintra to the beach runs seasonally and is an experience in itself. Make it a coastal half day after a morning at the Sintra palaces.

An archaeological site on a clifftop above Praia das Maçãs beach, holding the remains of a Roman temple and of an Islamic mosque built later on the same spot. That sequence is what makes the site significant. The Romans raised a temple here dedicated to the sun and moon, at a point where they watched the sun set into the ocean — the furthest west they knew. Centuries later, in the Islamic period, a small mosque was built on the same ground looking at the same sea. What you see today is stone foundations rather than standing buildings, so go knowing that. The value is in the location and the idea more than in the stones: a point chosen by two successive cultures for almost the same religious meaning — the end of the land, facing the ocean. The site is fully exposed to the Atlantic wind, and the view from the cliff along the coast is wide. Access is by car to Praia das Maçãs and a short climb on foot, or by the historic tram from Sintra to the beach in season.
