Alto Paraíso de Goiás is the main town of the Chapada dos Veadeiros region in north-eastern Goiás, about 230 kilometres from Brasília, and the starting point for most visitors to the national park and the surrounding waterfalls. At about 1,233 metres it is the highest town of the Central Plateau and the Centre-West, and its lands hold the 1,691-metre Morro do Pouso Alto, the highest point in the state. Since 2001 it has lain within the Pouso Alto Environmental Protection Area, in the heart of the Brazilian savanna, the cerrado. The town has more services than São Jorge village, with more pousadas, restaurants, shops and banks, and sits closer to many falls and trails, including the São Bento, Cristal, Almécegas and Loquinhas falls and the Catarata dos Couros. It is reached from Brasília on the GO-118 road or by daily bus.
