Pontianak's frontage on the Kapuas, Indonesia's longest river, a broad park and promenade where families gather in the evening, overlooking the wide river, its boats and the opposite bank with the Jami' Mosque and Kadriah Palace. The park has a fountain and a large emblem of the city. Colourful wooden boats, lit at night, leave its jetty on short river cruises past the wooden quarters, the mosque and the palace, and stalls on the promenade serve Pontianak dishes like kwetiau and the local coffee the city is known for. The park is free and boat rides cost a token fee. Check that dishes are halal, as some of the city's Chinese restaurants may not be. Come just before sunset, take a boat ride with the evening lights, then sit in one of the city's famous coffee shops.
