A museum in an old nineteenth-century Dutch railway station in the town of Ambarawa, originally built to carry soldiers to the military garrison, now holding a collection of old steam locomotives, among Asia's rarest steam collections, displayed on the tracks around the station. Its highlight is the weekend tourist train on a short line through rice fields and past the lake to Tuntang, in old wooden carriages. This line once had a rare rack-railway section for climbing mountains, sometimes run on special steam charters. The museum ticket is a token fee, and the train ride costs extra and should be booked ahead as seats are limited. Schedules change, so check before you go. It is great fun for children and railway fans; combine it with the nearby Gedong Songo temples for a day out from Semarang.
