A park in southern Kenya where herds of elephants walk in front of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Africa's most famous views. The mountain itself is in Tanzania, but the finest view of it is from the plains of Amboseli. Amboseli is famous for its long-tusked elephants, whose families have been studied continuously since 1972, making them some of the best-known elephants in the world. Lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo and zebras live here too. Most of the park is dry, but meltwater from Kilimanjaro's snows seeps underground and surfaces in green swamps that draw elephants, buffalo, hippos and birds. Observation Hill gives a sweeping view over the swamps and plains. The best time to see Kilimanjaro's summit clearly is early morning and evening, before the clouds close in. The fee is USD 90 per non-resident adult since October 2025, per visitor guides, and the park is about four hours by road from Nairobi.
