Child of Krakatoa, a volcano born from the sea in 1927 where the island of Krakatoa blew apart in 1883 in one of the most violent eruptions in recorded history, heard thousands of kilometres away, raising tsunamis that killed tens of thousands and colouring the world's sunsets for months. It lies in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, inside a marine reserve. The volcano is very active: part of it collapsed in December 2018, causing a tsunami, and in July 2026 the alert was raised to level three with continuous eruption spreading ash as far as Java and Sumatra, before being lowered to level two, caution, on 21 September 2026, with no approach within two kilometres of the crater. Boats leave from Canti jetty in South Lampung, hired per group for about IDR 2.5 million for a two-day trip around the islands, stopping at Sebesi island. Under current conditions boats circle the volcano at a safe distance without landing. Check the volcanology agency's bulletin before booking, and choose a licensed operator with life jackets, as the strait can turn rough.
