Ancient Thera is the second city the survivors' heirs built centuries on: a Dorian colony (9th BC) on the rock mountain of Mesa Vouno, 365 metres over the sea โ living a Greek, Ptolemaic then Roman millennium, leaving a main street with its agora, a theatre over the void, temples and mosaic floors between the beaches of Kamari and Perissa. Its magic is the site: ruins on a sky knife-edge with the Aegean on both sides โ black Kamari below north, Perissa south โ and the serpent road up from Kamari (car, or a taxing hour's walk) is half the adventure. It is the history between Akrotiri and the Venetians: the namer of the island Thera, writer of its oldest inscriptions. Morning is obligatory โ the mountain is shadeless and wind rules the crest.
