Andijan's finest historic monument, a late 19th-century complex built between 1883 and 1890 over 1.5 hectares, with a Friday mosque, a madrasa and a minaret. Andijan is the birthplace of Zahir al-Din Muhammad Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire in India. The madrasa stretches 123 m, its entrance framed by a tall arch between small corner minarets, its walls covered in blue and green patterns and mosaics in the Fergana manner. It now houses the Andijan Region Literary and Art Museum. The mosque on the west side is a working Friday mosque, its courtyard lined with raised, domed iwans, and in the courtyard stands a 32 m minaret, the tallest in the Fergana Valley. The complex was damaged by the 1902 earthquake and restored in 1971-1974 and 1999-2000. Entry to the mosque is free. Dress modestly, women cover their hair, and prayer times are best avoided. The complex sits in the heart of the old town near Registan Square and its market.
