The traditional fishing cove of Puerto Montt, gateway to Chilean Patagonia, on a calm channel facing green Tenglo Island. Its long street is lined with craft stalls and shops, ending at a seafood market and small restaurants on stilts over the water. The craft market sells Chiloé woollens, sweaters, socks and hats, wicker baskets, woodwork and lapis lazuli jewellery. The seafood market is piled with mussels, clams, smoked fish and dried seaweed, sold by fishermen from their boats. In the small restaurants above the market, fresh seafood dishes come with views of colourful boats, while sea lions and pelicans circle the pier. From the pier small boats cross to Tenglo Island in minutes. It gets crowded at midday, so watch your belongings. Southern Chile is often rainy, even in summer, so bring a rain jacket.
