Apeiranthos

**Because Naxos is a marble island, and here the stone is cheaper than any alternative — which explains the whole island.** ✅ **The background**: Naxos has **marble quarries worked since antiquity**, and its marble was exported and used for statues and temples across the Greek world. The quarries still operate. ✅ **The architectural result**: when marble is **locally available and cheap to move** (because it does not travel far), it becomes **an ordinary building material rather than a luxury one** — used for pavements, thresholds, steps and washing troughs, in the places concrete would be used elsewhere. ✅ **So you walk on marble in Apeiranthos** not because the village is rich but because it is what was to hand. ⚠ **And elsewhere on the island** are the ancient quarries' traces: **two colossal unfinished kouroi** still lying where they were left — at **Apollonas** and **Flerio** — each roughly ten metres long, abandoned because they cracked during carving.

**One loop up and back down — and Naxos is unquestionably the best Cycladic island for an interior.** ✅ **Why**: unlike most bare rocky Cyclades, **Naxos is fertile and mountainous**: valleys, olives, vines, terraces and real villages where people live from farming rather than tourism. **That makes its interior more important than its coast** for many visitors. ✅ **A suggested loop**: from Naxos town east to **Sangri** (the Temple of Demeter), then **Halki** — the old capital with its Venetian towers and traditional citron distillery, then **Filoti** under Mount Zas, then **Apeiranthos** (the finest), then down north towards **Apollonas** to see the colossal kouros, returning along the north coast. ⚠ **Allow a full day** — the mountain roads are slow and the distances longer than they look. ⚠ **You need a car**: buses reach the larger villages but will not let you do a loop.
