A marine reserve on Aqaba's South Beach, set up in 1997 over 2.8 square km, protecting part of the coral reefs along Jordan's short coastline, just 27 km of the Gulf of Aqaba. It shelters some 300 species of hard and soft coral and more than 500 species of fish, along with seagrass meadows, and the coral starts just a few metres from the shore. You can snorkel straight from the public beaches in the area, including the visitor centre beach; entry is free, per visitor guides, with a small charge for the toilets. Dive centres run trips to deeper and more distant sites. The water stays warm most of the year, and the air is kindest from autumn to spring. Wear water shoes, and don't touch or stand on the coral.

No. You can snorkel straight from the reserve's public beaches, where the coral starts a few metres out; scuba diving is done with the dive centres.
