The Aquário Encantado, the «Enchanted Aquarium», is a crystal-clear spring in the Bom Jardim district of Nobres, Mato Grosso, and one of the gems of an area nicknamed the «Bonito of Mato Grosso». The spring, fed by three sources, is about six metres deep, and its water is so clear that visitors seem to hang above the bottom, while dense shoals of fish, said to number around forty species, swim below. After admiring the spring, visitors float with the current for about a thousand metres down the Salobra River, a trip of some forty minutes, with mask, snorkel and life jacket provided. The village of Bom Jardim itself, home to about five hundred people, is known for its abundant birds and wildlife and dozens of natural sights, and is reached by a paved road from central Nobres. The site opens daily from 8 am to 4 pm, entry is bought through local agencies under the official digital voucher system, and booking ahead is essential. May to September is the best time to see the shoals; avoid the late afternoon, when the water is colder and the light dimmer.
