A public aquarium on Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, south of Los Angeles, opened on 20 June 1998, across the water from the Long Beach Convention Center and the historic Queen Mary. It had 1.7 million visitors in 2018. It holds more than 12,000 animals in tanks from about 19,000 to 1.3 million litres, across three main Pacific galleries: Southern California and Baja, the Northern Pacific, and the Tropical Pacific. Visitors see sharks in Shark Lagoon, sea lions, glowing jellyfish and colourful coral reefs, and can touch stingrays in an open pool, a big hit with children. Adult tickets are about $45 to $50, and timed reservations are needed at weekends and on busy days, per visitor guides. It is about 40 minutes' drive from downtown Los Angeles.
