Arboretum Lussich is a broad planted forest of 192 hectares at Punta Ballena in Maldonado Department. It holds more than 400 exotic species and about 70 from Uruguay, and it counts among the most important tree collections anywhere, a quiet green break only minutes from the crowded beaches of Punta del Este. On 5 October 1896 Antonio Lussich, owner of a maritime rescue company, bought 1,800 hectares holding nothing but dunes and stones. The next year he began planting to stop the wind and attract birds, using his company's contacts to bring seeds from several continents. The first trees were tamarisk, sea pine and eucalyptus. In December 1979, 182 hectares were donated to the municipality of Maldonado. You walk red earth paths among tall pines, junipers and oaks, with 45 species of eucalyptus, 20 of pine and 16 of oak. Colours change greatly with the seasons, some leaves flaring orange in autumn. The grounds hold an old well among the plants and an old house with a courtyard, and high points look out over the coastal bay. It is 11.7 km in a straight line from Punta del Este and 300 m from Route 93, so a car suits it best. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring water and mosquito repellent. Do not leave the paths or pick plants. Watch for slippery trails after rain, and ask about tours if you want the trees explained.
