A small, quiet town on the hills of Lake Ypacaraí's west shore, known for pottery and crafts and for old colonial houses with porches and tiled roofs along shady stone streets. Its best-known sight is the main road lined with pottery shops displaying thousands of colourful clay pieces outside: pots, jars, figures and garden ornaments, hand-made by the town's craftspeople. There are small cultural centres and galleries and an old train standing in the station. Areguá is also known for strawberries, and around August and September it holds a strawberry festival, with fresh strawberries, sweets and juices sold everywhere. Its hills look out over the lake. It is under an hour by bus or car from Asunción and usually paired with San Bernardino on a day around the lake. Paraguayan summers are very hot and humid from November to March, so carry water and a hat; winter is milder for sightseeing.
