Areia Branca is a white-sand beach at the northeastern end of Dili Bay. Clear, shallow turquoise water meets the sand, big trees shade the shore, steep green hills rise behind it, and the Cristo Rei statue stands on the nearby headland. Its Portuguese name means «white sand». It is about 600 m long, and the hills behind it are covered in savanna woodland and eucalyptus. The beach and hills are part of an Important Bird Area. It is one of Dili's most popular beaches, crowded on Sundays from morning until late at night, with small restaurants and cafés across the road. You sit in the shade of the trees, walk the sand and wade in the shallows at low tide. Fishermen walk out to the edge of the reef at low tide and mend their nets under the trees. The beach is about 5 km in a straight line northeast of central Dili, and you can walk there along the coast road. The water is very shallow at low tide, better for children than for swimming. Keep to the shade at midday.
