Arena da Amazônia is a football stadium of about 43,000 seats, built between 2010 and 2014 on the site of the old Vivaldão for the 2014 World Cup, and it later hosted football at the 2016 Olympics. It stands roughly midway between Manaus international airport and the historic centre, near the convention centre. The German firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners took inspiration from the rainforest around the city: the metal outer frame recalls the region's woven straw baskets, so at night it looks like a giant lit basket. It has rainwater recycling and sewage treatment, relies on natural ventilation to cut energy use, and more than 95 per cent of the old stadium's rubble was recycled. No regular tours are advertised, so the best thing to see is the frame from outside, especially in the evening, or the inside on a match, concert or event day, ticketed by programme.
