The Arg of Karim Khan, or Karim Khan Citadel, is a fortress in central Shiraz built as part of a Zand-era complex, the residence of Karim Khan Zand, founder of the Zand dynasty. It is now a museum, about 1.1 km in a straight line from the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque. Karim Khan drew on Safavid architecture when he ruled from Shiraz; after seeing Isfahan's Naqsh-e Jahan Square he laid out a great square in the north of the city, ringed by the citadel, the Vakil Bazaar, bathhouse and mosque. At times the citadel was also used as a prison. The rectangular fortress looks like a medieval castle, with high brick walls and round corner towers patterned in brick. Inside, a courtyard of trees and a pool is framed by rooms with stained-glass windows, and a bathhouse under decorated domes. The museum keeps set hours, so check them. Combine it with the nearby Vakil Mosque and Vakil Bazaar. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Iran and warns that British nationals risk detention, so check official guidance before making any plans.
