**Argentière** if you want quiet, a lower price and a wider view, and do not mind ten minutes by train into town — the local train is frequent and free with the guest card. **Chamonix** if you want the restaurants, shops, evening life and proximity to the Aiguille du Midi. For the advanced skier: Argentière is closer to Les Grands Montets. For a short first visit: Chamonix is easier.

Argentière is a mountain village at 1,250 metres, eight kilometres north of Chamonix, and it is the **ideal middle ground** between the town's bustle and Le Tour's isolation: a real village with a white church and pointed spire, wooden houses and restaurants, yet sitting at the foot of the valley's highest ski area (Les Grands Montets). Directly above it descends the **Argentière glacier** — among the valley's largest and the easiest to see from the village itself, with a pleasant walking path approaching its tongue. It is also the base for climbers heading to the north-side refuges. For a visitor: quieter than Chamonix and cheaper to stay in, ten minutes away by local train, and the mountain view is wider because the valley opens out here. Its eighteenth-century church has a graveyard holding climbers' graves — a quiet echo of Zermatt's cemetery on the Swiss side.
