**The capital of Kefalonia, and a town rebuilt from nothing** — on a sheltered inner bay, and the island's practical centre rather than its beautiful one. The **1953 earthquake** destroyed it almost completely, **and it was rebuilt in the 1950s** with low modern buildings — so do not expect an old town. But it is **where the life is**: the large **Vallianou** square with its cafés, the pedestrian **Lithostroto** street of shops, the **morning market** on the front, and the archaeological and Korgialenios folklore museums. ✅ Its most famous attraction is not man-made: **loggerhead turtles** swim in the bay directly in front of the quay and are seen daily from the edge — they come to the fishing boats. ✅ There is also the long stone **De Bosset bridge**, crossing the bay since 1813. ✅ And the **katavothres** — the sea swallow holes — are minutes away.

**From the quay, free, and without interfering — better and safer than any paid trip.** ✅ **Where and when**: **loggerhead turtles** swim in Argostoli bay and come close to the **harbour quay near the fish market**. **The best time is early morning** when the fishing boats return, because the turtles have learned that catch scraps are thrown there. Stand at the edge and you see them surface metres away. ⚠ **⚠ Do not feed them**: this is the commonest mistake. Feeding **changes their natural behaviour** and keeps them at the harbour among boats and propellers, **exposing them to injury**, and unsuitable food can make them ill. ⚠ **Do not touch them, get into the water with them or swim over them** — they are a threatened, legally protected species. ⚠ **No flash.** ✅ **And you do not need a paid boat trip** — the view from the quay is better, closer and free; and any operator promising «swimming with turtles» is offering something **that should not be done**.
**Points where the sea flows into the land and disappears — a globally rare phenomenon, minutes from town.** ✅ **What you see**: on the coast northwest of Argostoli, **sea water pours into fissures in the rock and vanishes**. It does not re-emerge nearby — it **crosses beneath the whole island**. ✅ **This puzzled people for centuries**: where does the water go? In the **19th century** the force was put to use — **watermills were built** driven by the inflow, and the remains of one still stand on the site. ✅ **The scientific answer came in the 1960s**: a **dye-tracing experiment** proved the water crosses the island underground through limestone fissures and **emerges about two weeks later** on the eastern side at **Melissani** and **Karavomylos**. ⚠ **Calibrate your expectations**: the site is **visually modest** — a rock channel, running water and a restored mill; **its value is the idea, not the view**, and the visit is 20 minutes. ✅ **But it is free and minutes away** — and it ties Melissani and Argostoli together into one story.
