Arraial d'Ajuda is a village on a plateau above the sea south of the Buranhém River, opposite Porto Seguro, ringed by Atlantic forest and mangroves and known for its long beaches and lanes full of small restaurants and shops, a meeting place for artists, writers and visitors from around the world. Its name honours the first Jesuits, who arrived in 1549 on three ships, one of them the Ajuda, the Help. From its lookout on the edge of the plateau there is a wide view over the beach and the sea. It is reached from Porto Seguro by a short ferry across the river, then a short road to the village. Below it lie long beaches with warm water, some calm enough for families.
