Arraial do Sana, or simply Sana, is a mountain village belonging to the municipality of Macaé, about 165 kilometres from the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the hill country near Lumiar and Nova Friburgo. It lies in the basin of the Sana River, part of the wider Macaé River basin. The village is known for its forests and many waterfalls, within a large protected area of Atlantic Forest where hundreds of bird species are said to have been recorded, along with plenty of wildlife. Numerous trails start here for mountain walkers and ecotourists, the best known climbing to the Peito do Pombo peak, said to rise to about 1,120 metres. Sana has become a favourite of Rio de Janeiro state residents in search of nature, and young people and backpackers come for peace away from the noise of the cities and to swim in the waterfall pools. The village has guesthouses and simple restaurants; take care at the falls after rain, when water levels rise.
