Arroio do Sal is a quiet beach town on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, about 30 kilometres south of Torres, 30 kilometres north of Capão da Canoa and 175 kilometres from Porto Alegre, with about ten thousand people whose numbers swell greatly in summer. Its first settled area was Estância do Meio near Lagoa Itapeva, where people lived from farming, cattle and fishing in the lagoon. Until about 1920 locals did not go to the sea, cut off from it by six kilometres of woods, dunes, streams and marshes, until one of them ventured to the shore and found fish and shellfish in plenty. It split from Torres as a municipality in 1988, and its coast runs with long, open beaches quieter than its neighbours, between the ocean and Lagoa Itapeva. It suits families and anyone after the sea without the crowds.
