A historic district in South Beach, Miami Beach, listed on the National Register in 1979. With 960 historic buildings it is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world, in its Streamline, Tropical and Mediterranean variations, built mostly between the Great Depression and the early 1940s. The district runs from the Atlantic in the east to Sixth Street in the south, and its best-known street is ocean-facing Ocean Drive, lined with small hotels in white, pink, blue and yellow, with streamlined curves, neon signs and little towers. At night the street becomes magical as colourful neon lights up the facades and cafes and restaurants spill onto the sidewalks, and a welcome centre on the district's history runs architectural walking tours. Walking around is free at any time. Early morning is best for photos in soft light, then the evening for the lights; the street is crowded and loud at night, with alcohol widely served.
