Sydney's largest art museum, on the edge of the Domain parkland near the Royal Botanic Garden, founded in the nineteenth century and housed in a classical colonnaded building, joined since 2022 by a light new building of glass and steel known as Sydney Modern. The collections cover Australian art from the colonial era to today, European and Asian art, and one of the country's most important collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, with dot paintings and sculpture. The new building is designed as pavilions stepping down towards the harbour, with open terraces and water views, and beneath it an old Second World War oil tank has become a vast dark gallery for installations. General admission is free, with fees for some temporary exhibitions, per the gallery. It suits a rainy day and pairs with the Botanic Garden and the Opera House on foot.
