A small park close to Arusha town that packs in a surprising range of scenery: the volcanic Mount Meru at 4,566 metres, the green grassland of Ngurdoto Crater, and the shallow Momella Lakes with their shifting colours and water birds. Unlike the big parks, here you can go on a walking safari with an armed ranger, canoe on the Momella Lakes, and see giraffes, buffalo and zebras up close. The forests are home to black-and-white colobus monkeys with their long tails. On clear days Kilimanjaro rises on the horizon from the Momella Lakes. Climbers summit Mount Meru in three or four days, and many use it as training before Kilimanjaro. The park is ideal for the first or last day of a safari, or for anyone short on time, as it is no more than an hour from Arusha.
