The Árvore da Preguiça, «Lazy Tree», is a famous tree between Jericoacoara village and Preá beach, about six kilometres from the village. It grew almost horizontal, its branches stretching more than four metres along the sand, after decades of the strong, constant trade winds of the area: instead of breaking, it bent and kept growing close to the ground. Along with the Pedra Furada rock it has become one of Jericoacoara's symbols and most photographed sights. It is protected by the Chico Mendes Institute, and climbing it or sitting on its branches is forbidden. It is reached on the eastern buggy, quad-bike or 4x4 tours, or on foot in about an hour and a half. The visit is free, and a few minutes are enough for photos.
