The Autódromo José Carlos Pace, better known as Interlagos, is a 4.309-kilometre motor-racing circuit in the south of São Paulo, set between the two large reservoirs that gave the district its name. It opened on 12 May 1940 and races run anticlockwise. It was renamed in 1985 after the Brazilian Formula One driver José Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977. The circuit has hosted the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix since 1973, with a contract running to 2030, and is tied to Brazilian champions such as Ayrton Senna, after whom the complex's karting track is named. The circuit is at its peak on Grand Prix weekend, when tens of thousands fill the stands, and national races and other events run through the year. On some days guided behind-the-scenes visits are offered, so check the programme and tickets before going.
