Awaza is a resort zone on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, west of the city of Türkmenbaşy in western Turkmenistan. It has grown from a small village into one of the largest resorts on the Caspian coast, about 10 km in a straight line from the city centre. The Awaza National Tourist Zone was presented in June 2007, covering 5,000 hectares, and building began that year, with the first new buildings on the coast opened in June 2009. The resort receives about 150,000 guests a year and also hosts international conferences. Huge white hotels in striking shapes line the shore, along with long sandy beaches, clear water and a promenade with lamps and gardens. A man-made river runs through the zone, lined with buildings and crossed by bridges, and there is a marina with a yacht club. Summer is hot and dry and is the peak season for domestic tourists, while spring and autumn are milder for walking. Buses link Awaza with Türkmenbaşy, its airport and Ashgabat, and the international airport lies within the district. The Yangykala Canyon is about 167 km away in a straight line.
