Ayacucho Cathedral is a large church on the main square of Ayacucho in the Andes of south-central Peru. A pink, ornate facade stands between two bell towers, with a large arched doorway, a dome at the back and the broad square in front. Its official name is the Cathedral Basilica of St Mary, and it is also called Huamanga Cathedral. Building began in 1632 and was finished in 1672, attributed to Francisco Verdugo, the second bishop of Huamanga. The church of San Juan Bautista stood on the site from 1540 before it. It is Baroque, known for its Churrigueresque interior decoration, and was declared a National Cultural Heritage site in 1972. You see the facade and towers from the square, and walk around it among the colonial buildings and wooden balconies of the centre, sitting in the square to watch daily life. The facade is lit in the evening. The cathedral is on the main square in central Ayacucho. It is a working church, so cover your shoulders and knees, and do not wander during Mass.
