Bahrain International Circuit is a motorsport venue at Sakhir with a main track of 5.412 km, home to Formula One's Bahrain Grand Prix. It draws motorsport fans from across the Gulf, with its tower and white tent-like grandstands rising from flat desert. The circuit opened in 2004 and hosted the first Formula One race in the Middle East that same year, only just finished in time and not quite complete for that first race. It has since staged Formula 2, endurance and drag racing, holds about 70,000 spectators, offers several track layouts and carries the top FIA Grade 1 licence. The circuit is known for night races under floodlights, which make conditions cooler and the views more dramatic. The Sakhir Tower stands out above the pit lane, and the desert stretches away beyond the fence. Outside race days the place is quiet, with occasional events and driving experiences, so check the calendar before you go, as reaching the gate does not guarantee entry. The circuit is about 2.5 km from Mohamed bin Zayed Nature Reserve and 8.4 km from the Tree of Life in a straight line. It is hard to reach without a car, except on race days, when transport is usually laid on. Book Grand Prix tickets early, as good seats go fast.
